For the last 5 years composer / pianist Ananda Sukarlan and choreographer / dancer Chendra Panatan have closely collaborated in producing artistic works that have been produced & performed in England, Spain and Indonesia. Some of those works will be performed at the Gedung Kesenian Jakarta on the 24th and 25th of June as the Grand Closing of the Jakarta Anniversary Festival 2010.

They have also worked with European artists, among others in producing the first performance of the collosal Kecak Dance in Spain in 2008 with 40 Spanish dancers trained for 2 weeks by Chendra, during the Sueca Festival, Valencia. This immensely succesful performance has since then influenced Spanish composers to use elements from Kecak in their musical works, among others the National Music Award 2005 Jesus Rueda who wrote his Kecak Sonata no. 2 which has been performed by Ananda Sukarlan in many countries and recorded with NAXOS label.

In this performance which will mix 4 different artistic world (music, dance, literature and photography/lighting) Ananda & Chendra will perform choreographic works on music by David del Puerto, Santiago Lanchares and Ananda Sukarlan himself. A special bonus will be given by Ananda playing duo piano with young talented pianist Elwin Hendrijanto performing Leonard Bernstein's WestSide Story Symphonic Dances in a new 2-piano arrangement. This duo will also play Ananda's great 2-piano work "The Humiliation of Drupadi" as the grand finale. This work was the highlight of Jakarta New Year Concert last year (2009).

There will also be slides by Dian Rosita. Other participating musicians will be flutist Marini Widyastari, the 14-year-old violin prodigy Inez Raharjo as well as dancers from Jakarta Ballet under the direction of Chendra Panatan.

The CDs released recently.

Ananda Sukarlan has long been a huge fan of the great Australian contemporary composer Peter Sculthorpe, and Peter has also loved Ananda's interpretations of his works and dedicated his exquisite "Little Passacaglia" especially to Ananda. Now, Ananda has recorded his piano works as well as his "From Saibai" for violin and piano and two short trios (with Ema Alexeeva, violin & David Apellaniz, cello) . The CD has been released by Verso in Christmas 2006, entitled "Peter Sculthorpe : Spirits of Place" , which includes the world premiere recordings of Little Passacaglia and Sometimes when I am dreaming. A special & curious bonus in this CD is Ananda Sukarlan playing with himself through a multi-track recording in Sculthorpe's "Four Little Pieces" for piano duet !

Ananda Sukarlan's CD with the works by Jesus Rueda (National Music Award 2004) received high acclaim from critics. The double CD "Complete String Quartets and works for strings & piano", played by Ananda Sukarlan and the Arditti Quartet, has been chosen as the best CD of the month of July 2006 by the music magazine "Scherzo" in Spain. This CD is released by Fundacion Autor.

The premiere of David del Puerto's great Symphony no. 2 "Nusantara" for piano and orchestra by Ananda Sukarlan and the Orquesta de la Comunidad de Madrid conducted by Jose Ramon Encinar in May 2006 proved to be not only highly successful, but also a historical event. The four most important Spanish newspapers (ABC, El Pais, El Mundo & La Razon) as well as an enthralled audience hailed it a masterpiece. It was also broadcasted live by the Radio Nacional de Espaņa . The piece now has been demanded by other orchestras and festivals around the world. Venice Bienale has programmed it for the inauguration evening on the 1st of October at the Teatro La Fenice with the same players, and the event was broadcast live by RAI -3, Italy. Ananda Sukarlan and Jose Ramon Encinar have recorded it for the Stradivarius recording company, who was so enthusiastic after its premiere to release it together with an earlier orchestral piece by David del Puerto, the Violin Concerto of 1999 . This long-awaited CD has been released .
All of these CDs can be obtained through Ananda Sukarlan's management office at ycep@yahoo.com .
